Kannonzaki Nature Museum (Yokosuka, Kanagawa) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Kannonzaki Nature Museum is located in the Kannonzaki Park in Kanagawa Prefecture. Opened in 1953 and initially a museum and aquatic research center, it is the first place in Japan to successfully farm snapper. Surprisingly little-known, it is something of a rare eco-museum at which a variety of research is still ongoing.

All the creatures of the Miura Peninsula are here!

At this museum you can see both sea creatures and forest plants. Notably, Kannonzaki is the only place in Tokyo Bay that has rocky shores. This museum focuses on the plants and animals of the so-called ‘Tokyo Bay Catchment Area’, an area that runs from the source of the river to the point it enters Tokyo Bay. One of the most important exhibits centers on the plants and animals of the Miura peninsula area of Kannonzaki. The exhibit of Tanakia fish is one corner of the aquarium that shouldn’t be missed. Apart from this, it is also possible to learn about many other aspects of natural life on the Miura peninsula, including the seaweed, reef fish, insects, amphibians, reptiles, moss, ferns and plants.

It’s fun to touch! Get close to nature in this corner of the museum

In the ‘Touch Pool’ on the terrace, you can touch some typically hard-to-find creatures such as octopi, rockfish, goby, largemouth goby, purple sea urchin, starfish, eel and more. You can touch the spikes of a sea urchin and shake hands with an octopus. Please note that the creatures in the ‘Touch Pool’ will depend on the season.

Many different events to experience

This museum offers many fun events, including ‘Reef Creature Observation, ‘Tidal Flat Crab Observation, ‘Discover creatures of the reef!’ and ‘Mudflat Crab Egg-laying Observation’. At these events you have the chance to hear detailed commentary from the curators and breeding staff. These events require a reservation to participate, so check the museum’s webpage for more details.
